Episode 83 - Don't Accidentally Upgrade to Windows 11

Episode 83 has dropped! Listen now then come back here to discuss.

So if my computer already automatically upgraded, can I reverse it?

Well, I have no first hand experience with this, as I am still on Windows 10. But here are two links I found, one from Microsoft, and one from another site, lifewire, that I have good experience with:

Happy to help if you run into any trouble. What made you decide you want to rollback? I’m just curious.

Well, when you say things like, “Don’t accidentally upgrade to Windows 11”, and that you won’t upgrade and are willing to pay money to not upgrade, then I question whether or not it’s a good idea. :\ I am waaaay beyond the 10 day period that you can rollback your upgrade in, so I’m stuck with it. I know that when it happened, I didn’t like some of the changes they made. But I couldn’t tell you what any more, cause it was too long ago, and it seems that I have made peace with them. :0

Also, I tend to hesitate to upgrade when a big upgrade first comes out, because there are inevitably problems that they don’t realize are there until it’s been out and people are actually using the new version. So, I tend to wait for a year or so. But I feel like I wasn’t really given a choice about the upgrade. I wouldn’t have done it otherwise.

First of all, I apologize I didn’t get these episodes out long ago, in time to prevent more people from getting pushed into an upgrade, like you did.

Good catch on recognizing my own reluctance to upgrade. It does send perhaps a somewhat confusing message. Which was, sort of my intent. Not to confuse of course, but to convey my own deep ambivalence on this topic. On one hand, my knee jerk reaction to the idea of upgrading to Windows 11 is total rejection. Another part of me just wants to shrug and say “whatever” - it’s already so bad, it won’t make a difference.

However, I just don’t have enough direct knowledge and experience about Windows 10 and 11 to be confidently more specific than that. I have to rely on what I’ve read, and my own trusted sources. But none of that really gives me the same level of confidence of having experience myself.

In general, it feels like Windows 10 is mostly just as bad as Windows 11, but probably Windows 11 just pushes a bit farther ahead. But if you’re sticking with Windows, I think it’s just as well that you switch over. My advice is not to worry about trying to get back to Windows 10. Let’s just try to make the best out of a bad situation.

As far as your hesitation on upgrading quickly, I am 100% with you. Thankfully, Windows 11 was released in October 2021, so it’s far from new - Microsoft has just gotten progressively pushier as people haven’t been upgrading as fast as they would like them to.

P.S. I am still on Windows 10 for now.

I always wonder why they feel like they’ve got to change the entire layout of things, and relabel where you can find options in the settings? So many things. Just when we’ve gotten used to where things were. Ugh. I think the pushiness is what I ran into. Maybe that should be a clue to them that they ought to try something different with their upgrades? Hmmm?? I will take your advice and try to make the best of it.
