How to block image tracking in email

These are instructions to configure image tracking blocking that we discussed in in Super Simple Security Principles episode 18.

If we don’t have instructions for your setup, or the instructions aren’t working for you, please reply to this topic (with a screenshot if you know how) and we will help you figure it out.

If you access your email through an app on your phone or tablet

iPhone / iPad - Apple Mail app - Enable “Protect Mail Activity”. Once you enable this, the other 2 checkboxes, “Hide IP Address” and “Block All Remote Content” are automatically enabled. It does not support individual sender exceptions.

iPhone / iPad - Gmail app - I recommend the “Ask before displaying external images” option.

Android - Gmail app - I recommend the “Ask before showing” option.

Fastmail app - I prefer the “Show remote images from senders in my contacts, otherwise ask”.

If you access your email through a browser

Gmail - I recommend the “Ask before displaying external images” option.

Outlook - The default settings may already be what you want. Read through this and let me know if you have any questions.

Yahoo - The default settings may already be what you want. Read through this and let me know if you have any questions.

Fastmail - I prefer the “Show remote images from senders in my contacts, otherwise ask”.

If you access your email through an app on your computer.

MacOS - Apple Mail app - Enable “Protect Mail Activity”. Once you enable this, the other 2 checkboxes, “Hide IP Address” and “Block All Remote Content” are automatically enabled. It does not support individual sender exceptions.
