In episode 4 of Super Simple Security Principles, we talk about Protection Partners. Here I want to have a brainstorming discussion about rules to use with our Protection Partners. I’ll start us off.
The Spidey Sense rule
We all have something inside that works sort of like Spider-Man’s “spidey sense”. It’s a warning system that he has when he is about to get shot, or something bad is going to happen.
Our every day spidey sense doesn’t warn us about the same things that Spider-Man’s does, but it’s powerful, and can help keep us safe online, if we listen to it. If you’re ever doing something online, and you have even just a brief moment where you wonder, “how safe is this?” or feel a sense of hesitation in yourself at proceeding, that could be your spidey sense warning you.
That is the moment to pause and reach out to your Protection Partner. Sometimes it will be something that was safe but you didn’t understand - that’s worth pausing for. Many times it will prevent something bad from happening.
This is one rule I suggest everyone to have.
