Use one.one.one.one for website filtering / blocking malware

UPDATE 4 Apr 2025: We’ve had some issues with this app, so for now we are withdrawing our recommendation. At some point, we may do further investigation and contact customer support.

I just installed the one.one.one.one app today. For those of you who aren’t familiar with it, it’s an app that allows you to block some content online automatically. It also acts as a vpn to help secure you. It’s fast and free! (and in case there was any doubt, we get nothing from recommending it to you other than the satisfaction of sharing a good tool).

I installed it on my iPhone, so the screenshots are from that, but the Android version should be similar. You can install it on your desktop as well. Go to https://one.one.one.one for links to your platform of choice.

Above is the app in the app store. The next few screenshots are from the installation process.

At this point, you click on the “hamburger menu” (3 horizontal lines) in the top right.
This takes you to the settings menu shown below.

From here you click on “Advanced”

Then “Connection options”

Then “DNS Settings”

Then “1.1.1.1 for Families”

And finally select either “Block Malware” or “Block Malware and Adult Content”.
At this point, you’re all good. Happy Surfing.

This sounds amazing, and I’m going to do it on my phone and computer. Is there a way you can use this within your home WiFi network? So any device connected to your network is covered?

And do you have instructions on how to configure it to block malware and adult content on computers? I installed it on my computer, but when I click on the app to open it, nothing happens. I’ve uninstalled it once and tried again and still nothing.

I believe you’re on Windows which I haven’t done yet, but based on my Mac installation, I’m guessing the problem is that you are expecting a big window to appear and it’s just adding a little icon to the system tray that you have to click on to find the settings.

You can find the official instructions for every computer type here.

If you have any trouble with their instructions, let me know and I will work through it along with you.

Thank you!i will try that

Have you run into any issues with it preventing apps from running? This morning I could connect to almost nothing on my phone, and after doing some research, and trying a few things, found that turning off WiFi assist helped, but I still had some problems with the my email app not opening (and maybe some other things as well, I didn’t go through all my apps) but when I turned off the vpn, I was able to get into my email again

As a follow up- I disabled the vpn for 15 minutes, then was doing other things, and went back into PayPal, and got the circle of doom. I went in and disabled the vpn again, and I was able to get in.

Ugh, sorry to hear that. That’s disappointing. I have some suspicions about issues it may have caused for me too. I disabled it myself a while back, both on my phone and on my mac, but I’m still not sure if it was the culprit. With your story though too, I’m inclined to just abandon it, and test out some other options for now.

Thank you for sharing your experience, that is hugely valuable!

That’s disappointing, for sure. I’m glad my phone wasn’t broken, because that’s what I thought at first!
