Were our emails hacked?

Hi,

The other day my hubs got an email from his company server stating that an auto payment to me had been blocked. It did have my email address as the recipient but I didn’t get, nor was I expecting to get anything from the hubs. I assume his email was compromised, even though it was blocked by the company servers. Is my email also compromised., any suggestions as to steps going to forward to fix this ?

From your description, I see no reason to think there’s a problem with your email account, but there’s clearly some issue with his. He should immediately change his email password to be a strong, unique one. I can’t emphasize that enough. I know so many people are still just memorizing and typing in their password and so having a strong password is just too hard. This is the biggest reason I strongly advocate for a password manager. Top of my list being 1Password. For a gmail account, I have a 100 character length password, and anyone else can too, but only if you use a password manager because clearly that’s too long to type in.

Also, for email, if nowhere else, he should be using two factor authentication. If you think you can convince him to.

If he was already doing these things, and it still got hacked, let’s talk more. Otherwise, a strong password and two factor authentication is a good starting point.

Especially for a vital work email like you’re describing, I think anything less than that is begging to get hacked.
